Plants of woodland settings, the Dog Toothed Violet is of European origin (the name refers to the shape of the bulb). All like cool humus-rich growing conditions in the spring with a period of drier dormancy in the shade in summer. They all have good interesting leaves and associate well with Dicentra, Trilliums, Epimedium and the Anemone nemorosa. Knightshayes in Devon and The Garden House in Buckland Monachorum also in Devon both have good displays.
