Tulipa bakeri Lilac Wonder is a dependable sun loving plant closely related to T. saxatalis.(which is originally from Rhodes, Crete and areas of SW Turkey growing in rocky places.) This hybrid was raised in 1926. The leaves are similarly broad, dark glossy green with bulbs that are often stoloniferous forming good sized patches when undisturbed in the right conditions. The flowers are 2-3" (5-8cm) wide with up to four per stem with a broad butter yellow central zone surrounded by darker pink-lilac. Completely dependable in the south, it does come early into leaf and in very late springs maybe less dependable in northern areas. The whole plant is about 6" (15cm) tall.

RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Tulipa saxatilis (Bakeri Group) Lilac Wonder has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
