Tulip Purissima is one of the Fosteriana tulips, with its origins around Samarkand in Uzbekistan in Central Asia. Opening a pale primrose yellow, about which we receive a number of phone calls wondering whether a packing mistake has occurred, they turn through creamy shades to pure white and then in late March sunshine they open wide to reveal dramatic mascara black anthers. Strong stemmed over bright green leaves.
This plant/cultivar has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
Plant Tulip Purissima bulbs 5-6" (12-15cm) deep, in full sun in rich, well-drained soil, in groups of 5, with about 7 per square foot, or 5" (12cm) apart. It is also suitable for containers. Don't be in a rush to get the tulips in the ground as they will benefit from planting in late October or early November, by which time the first frosts will have reduced the level of disease in the soil.
