With the common name of Mallow, this is a more modern take on an old cottage garden favourite. With a vigorous yet compact growth habit, Barnsley Baby has lush heart shaped green foliage from March through until November, with large (up to 7cm across) pale pink flowers with a dark pink throat displayed throughout the summer. Over time these fade to white, giving another level of interest to the plant. Ideal for patio’s or where space is of a premium, this mallow is a cousin of the much larger Barnsley variety, but only grows to a maximum of 3 feet tall.
Lavatera Barnsley Baby is best grown in the border Dig a hole approximately twice the size of the rootball. Knock the plant out of the pot, and place into the centre of the hole, and backfill, ensuring the returned soil is lightly pressed into place. Also ensure the crown of the plant is above the soil surface.
Fully grown this Lavatera will be 100cm tall and 75cm wide, so please bear this in mind when finalising the position of this plant in your garden
Barnsley Baby will be happy in both the full sun and partial shade. They prefer water retentive but free draining soils. Keep well watered during the establishment year. Deadhead throughout the season to encourage further flushes of flower.
