A native of Galicia and NW Portugal growing on the banks of streams and in damp meadow areas in heavy acidic soils in valley bottoms. An iconic small species, one that is much loved and sought after by many, but they rarely do well in warm, dry, limey soils. Neutral to acid soils suit them better, moist in spring and more shaded in summer. Grow them where they will be happy and seed about. The seed can grow to flowering size within 3 years.
This plant/cultivar has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
Grow them where they will be happy and can seed about - an acidic soil is best, although neutral soils are fine too. They will not thrive in limey conditions. Grows well in sandy peaty soil at the edge of water.
