A much smaller Colchicum, with a naturally smaller bulb than the others we list and one to treasure in a raised bed or in a trough. The flowers open nearly flat to the soil with pointed tips, covered in wonderful darker pinkish-purple tessellations (chequering). I seem to make it sound as though growing them is a challenge. They should be none too difficult if you have the right place.
Easy to grow in deep, moisture-retentive soil, these appear from their summer dormancy, denuded of leaves, to flower in the autumn-hence ''Naked Ladies''. Because these are smaller (and the bulbs are markedly smaller) they may be best in a raised bed or alpine trough. A pointer to the end of summer, their bright flowers last incredibly well considering their apparent susceptibility, the strap-like leaves only properly appearing in the spring.
This plant/cultivar has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
They need planting 2-3" (5-8cm) deep, and 3" (8cm) apart. Best in a raised bed or trough in more sun than shade
