Begonia sutherlandii

Small leaved, and adorned by strings of many smaller flowers, a very undemanding Begonia that could be used for a number of situations - in hanging baskets as it trails prettily, or in pots as it also forms a stem if it can, or it can be used as a houseplant. Lots of people tell us that they, or a friend, had a plant for years and formed quite an attachment to their Begonia but having eventually lost it they have not been able to find it for sale again. Not quite hardy enough to leave out in the garden in the winter. Dried off in the autumn and kept dry over winter the tubers will gradually get larger in size each year, and the plant bigger.

RHS Award of Garden Merit.

This plant/cultivar has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant. 

Planting Instructions

Pot into good compost with about 2" (5 cm) of soil over the tuber and start off in frost free conditions, probably out of direct sun. In the summer they grow best in light shade. In pots they will need regular watering and  occasional liquid feeds, do look out for Vine weevil - a pest of all Begonias and some other bulbs. They are not hardy so the tubers will need protection over winter when dormant so do bring them into dry frost free conditions, repotting in the spring. Small orange flowers from mid summer.
