These were originally presumed to be a form of G. papilio when first sold at Hadspen House (now The Newt in Somerset) many years ago. Now they are thought to be more closely linked to G. ecklonii. Sturdy plants which are relatively vigorous and indeed seed around the nursery where their seedlings vary widely in shape and colour, suggesting that this is a plant of hybrid origin. Possibly less hardy than G. papilio, but more dramatic with hooded crimson flowers.
Plant in a sunny situation in moisture retentive soils, about 4-5" (8-10cm) deep and 4" (10cm) apart. In cold gardens may need mulching in winter.
Flowers Late Summer
Height 36" (90cm)
