Tall lilies for the borders with large scented trumpets for flowers in mid summer. Much like a good string of pearls on a simple black dress, Lilium regale provides that indefinable understated but classical look, and in this case with a huge scent. Glistening white, with some yellow in the throat, the backs of the petals flushed with pink. The regale lilies prefer alkaline conditions.
This plant/cultivar has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
These lily bulbs are smaller than we expected them to be. We are sorry about that, it was evidently a poor growing season for them in 2023. They will still flower. Lilium regale bulbs should be planted about 5" (12cm) deep and 6"(15cm) apart in fertile, well drained soil in a sunny or partly shaded position, among the roots of trees suits well, but not too crowded. Lily beetle is a scourge, red and black and very visible, They are eminently squishable but their larvae in a slimy protective blanket are worse to deal with. Over much of the UK now they are a pest for which there seem to be no natural predators.
